Transport Company Ville Silvasti Ltd’s TCI concept powers Pahkakoski wind farm; introduces a new way to execute wind power projects
Silvasti has been chosen as the Transport Crane Installation (TCI) contractor of Pahkakoski wind farm, to be constructed in the municipality of Ii in Northern Ostrobothnia of Finland.
The Pahkakoski wind farm will consist of 30 turbines, with a production capacity of 600 gigawatt-hours annually, making it one of the biggest in Finland. The construction phase of the project will start in 2024, and commercial operation is planned to begin in the summer of 2025.
TCI is a new, innovative concept developed by Silvasti for the construction and servicing of wind power projects. The customer is Ilmatar, a leading Nordic Independent Power Producer (IPP) with approximately 1GW portfolio of renewable energy in operation, under construction or in ready-to-build phase. The turbines will be supplied by the Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas.
Silvasti has extensive experience of over 700 wind power projects on transportation and port handling. With its TCI-concept, Silvasti now takes a step to an even more comprehensive role as a player in the field of renewable energy by adding all-inclusive, flexible and scalable solutions for building new wind farms, as well as servicing and de-commissioning existing ones.
With the TCI- concept, in which the turbines are supplied by a turbine manufacturer and the construction phase is executed by an independent TCI-contractor, Silvasti can offer its customers an alternative way to execute wind farm projects. The TCI-concept provides cost-efficiency through optimization of the execution and required infrastructure while ensuring high quality of work and safety by working with the most experienced co-operation partners.
“We strongly believe the time is right to introduce this concept to the European market. There is a need to construct high volumes of renewable energy, and wind farms are getting bigger and turbines more standardized. This gives room to introduce an alternative way to execute these projects. I’d like to thank our team, partners and Ilmatar for their exceptional efforts in reaching this milestone,” says Ville Silvasti, Founder and Chairman of Board at Silvasti.
“The TCI concept renews the way the wind industry has been operating in Europe for over 30 years. Executing projects with the TCI concept has been the norm in the US market. In addition to bringing cost-efficiency, a more industrialized way of executing projects will pave way to even more wind power projects,” says Paula Kohvakka, Head of TCI Development at Silvasti.
“We hand picked a very experienced dream team to execute the TCI project, with the right skills and high performance. By engaging in planning and design early on in the project, we are able to optimize the wind power project execution,” says Azade Pierroff, Commercial Director at Silvasti.
While Pahkakoski is Silvasti’s first large scale TCI project in the construction of a new wind farm, the company has over the past two years executed several TCI service projects for wind turbines already in the operation phase.
